There is a real gap between contributing to a system and being accountable for its behavior. Most of what I know about engineering came from crossing that gap: reviewing decisions instead of formatting, writing runbooks another person can actually use, and standardizing the small things that let a team move without concentrating all the context in one head. These notes are about that transition and the judgment calls that arrive once a system is too important to rewrite casually.
